Interpreting isn't a single, uniform activity. Depending on the context, number of participants, language combination, and event format, a different method is used – and with it, different technical infrastructure.
Simultaneous interpreting is the most demanding form: the interpreter translates in real time while the speaker talks. It requires interpreting booths, microphones, a simultaneous interpreting system, and receiver devices for listeners. It's the standard method at international conferences, EU bodies, and large congresses.
Consecutive interpreting happens with a time delay: the speaker talks for a segment, pauses, and the interpreter then delivers the translation. No booth system is needed, but it takes more time. It suits smaller groups, negotiations, or press conferences.
Whispered interpreting (chuchotage) is the most compact variant: the interpreter sits next to the listener and whispers the translation directly into their ear. It works for small groups without equipment, and can be combined with a portable guide system for larger groups. There's also liaison interpreting, media interpreting, and specialized forms such as sign language interpreting.
